.au Domain Eligibility – Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to remain eligible to hold a .au domain?

To hold and renew a .au domain name, registrants must continue to meet eligibility requirements under .au Domain Administration (auDA) licensing rules. Even if you were eligible when the domain was first registered, changes to your business details (such as an inactive ABN or ACN) may prevent renewal.

What happens if my registrant details are no longer valid?

If your registrant details become invalid, you may not be able to renew your domain name when it expires. This could result in the loss of your domain if no action is taken before the renewal date.

How will I know if my .au domain has eligibility issues?

If your .au domain is due to expire within 90 days and your registrant details are invalid (for example, an inactive ABN or ACN), you will receive an email notification outlining the issue and the steps required to resolve it.

What will the email notification include?

The email will:

  • Explain why your domain is currently ineligible for renewal

  • Outline the actions required to restore eligibility

  • Ask you to contact us directly so we can assist with the required changes

I’m a sole trader and my ABN is inactive — what should I do?

You have two options:

Reactivate your ABN online, which will restore your eligibility to renew the domain, or

Change the registrant details so the domain is registered under a currently active ABN

We can assist you with either option.

My business or company ABN/ACN is inactive — what are my options?

If you wish to keep your domain:

A Change of Registrant (CoR) may be required

In some cases, this must be completed manually and supported by documentation showing the domain should transfer to an eligible entity

We’ll guide you through this process and let you know what documentation is needed.

What happens if I don’t take any action?

Unfortunately, if eligibility issues are not resolved before expiry, the domain cannot be renewed under auDA rules and may be lost.

Can you help me fix this?

Yes. We’ll explain what’s required, help update your details, and manage the process on your behalf wherever possible. If you’ve received an eligibility notice, please contact us as soon as possible so we can assist before your domain expires.
